1.5mm Double-Side Textured Geomembrane for Landfills in New Zealand

Double-textured HDPE geomembrane is a high-density polyethylene liner manufactured with rough textures on both surfaces. Made primarily from HDPE resin, it combines low permeability and chemical resistance with surface characteristics to improve interface friction under suitable installation conditions.

Compared with smooth HDPE geomembrane, double-textured HDPE geomembrane provides a rougher contact surface on both sides. This can be beneficial in landfill lining systems, slope protection applications, mining facilities, and composite liner systems where interface friction between the geomembrane and adjacent materials is an important design consideration. For an end-of-life vehicle (ELV) floc waste monofill, 1.5 mm double-textured HDPE geomembrane is a reasonable preliminary option.

Project Background

End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs) undergo dismantling, shredding, and material recovery before their remaining waste fractions are sent for further treatment or disposal. One of these residual streams is commonly referred to as floc waste. Its composition depends on the vehicle recycling process, separation efficiency, and the materials present in the incoming waste stream.

Unlike a landfill that receives a broad mixture of waste types, a monofill is designed to manage a specific waste stream. In this project, the proposed facility is intended for floc waste generated during the shredding of End-of-Life Vehicles. The challenge is not simply to supply enough geomembrane to cover the site. The liner system must be designed to meet the project’s containment requirements while accounting for material compatibility, slope stability, drainage, installation quality, and long-term performance.

After carefully reviewing the project drawings and technical requirements provided by the client, the technical team developed a liner solution tailored to the landfill project. Based on the application requirements, the team recommended 1.5 mm HDPE geomembrane for the landfill lining system.

Why Does This Project Use Double-Textured Geomembrane?

1. Improved Friction at Both Interfaces

The textured surfaces improve interface friction between the geomembrane and adjacent materials, such as GCL and drainage geocomposites. This reduces the risk of relative movement between layers.

2. Support for Landfill Slope Stability

In a landfill cap liner system, slope stability can be affected by the weight of the geosynthetic layers, cover soil loads, and other site-specific conditions. Double-textured HDPE geomembrane improves interface friction and supports the stability assessment of the sloped lining system.

3. Compatibility with Multilayer Geosynthetic Systems

The project involves HDPE geomembrane, GCL, and nonwoven needle-punched geotextile. Subject to the final design, double-textured geomembrane can form part of the multilayer containment system, working alongside other geosynthetics to provide containment, separation, and protection functions. Material selection and layer arrangement must follow the project specifications.

4. Durable Containment Performance

HDPE geomembrane provides low permeability, resistance to many chemical substances, and durability for landfill containment applications. The double-textured surface adds a focus on interface friction, allowing material selection to address both seepage control and the stability requirements of sloped systems.

FAQ

Q2: What is the difference between double-textured and smooth HDPE geomembrane?

Smooth HDPE geomembrane has a relatively flat surface and is commonly considered for base liner areas and configurations where smooth material is appropriate. Double-textured HDPE geomembrane has textured surfaces on both sides, which may provide more favourable interface friction under suitable conditions.

Q3: Is 1.5 mm HDPE geomembrane enough for this project?

1.5 mm double-textured HDPE geomembrane can be considered as a preliminary option, but the final selection should consider the waste and leachate characteristics, design life, subgrade conditions, cover loads, installation requirements, and applicable owner or regulatory specifications.
